When the farmers' movement started on the borders of Delhi last year, no one had any idea that it would bow down even Prime Minister Narendra Modi, who stood firm on his decisions.
The spark of the farmers' movement that started from Punjab was visible when thousands of people of the state came and stood at the Singhu and Tikri borders of Delhi. He also got a lot of support from the farmers of his fellow state Haryana and within a few days a peasant movement started from western Uttar Pradesh to Uttarakhand and Rajasthan.
Political setbacks for BJP
Now it was the turn to give a political setback to the BJP. First Shiromani Akali Dal left in Punjab and then in Rajasthan Hanuman Beniwal's Rashtriya Loktantrik Party. Nevertheless, the government stood firm on its decision and tried to show that it would not back down on the issue of agricultural laws.
But gradually this movement gained momentum. All the democratic organizations, farmer-laborer organizations, opposition parties came out on the road in support of the farmers and against the agricultural laws.
The farmers organized many events from Bharat Bandh to Rail Roko, so that no person coming in the movement should remain hungry and thirsty, at least at Singhu, Ghazipur and Tikri border took full care of it.
BJP leaders protest
During the Bengal assembly elections in the month of April-May, the farmers declared that they would work to defeat the BJP. BJP got a big defeat in Bengal elections.
Simultaneously, in Punjab, Haryana, Uttarakhand and Uttar Pradesh, BJP leaders started protesting strongly.
The situation became such that it became difficult for the BJP leaders to hold even small public meetings. In many villages of these states, posters banning the arrival of leaders of BJP and their allies were put up.
Now the BJP and the central government were beginning to understand that it was not easy for them to fight with the farmers. The movement had become very strong and the farmers used to say that they would sit on the borders for 5 years.
On social media too, supporters of the farmers' movement had pushed BJP workers and leaders on the backfoot.
The BJP and the Modi government had received feedback from the Sangh Parivar, all the agencies that the farmers' movement can cause a big loss in the elections of Uttar Pradesh, Uttarakhand and the remaining political land in Punjab can also be lost. On November 19, Prime Minister Narendra Modi announced the return of agricultural laws due to increasing pressure from farmers and opposition and fear of electoral defeat.
Now the farmers also understood that the government has come under pressure. So he put six demands before the government. The government agreed to most of these demands after a brief tussle and the farmers also announced the suspension of the agitation.
The farmers have said that if the government strays from its promises, they will crack it down again. Certainly this movement has shown the ground to the BJP and Modi government flying in the seventh sky and has also tried to explain that in democracy the power lies with the people and not with the governments.
